“Ayubowan” – Warm Welcome
The pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, is yours to explore.
Arrival transfer to Colombo. Approximate driving time to Colombo is 45 minutes to 1 hour. (Lunch included)
Check-in at the hotel and feel free to explore the city of Colombo.

Colombo

Colombo is the commercial capital and the largest city of Sri Lanka. It is located on the west coast of the island and is adjacent to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (which is the official capital of Sri Lanka), a suburb or the parliamentary capital of Sri Lanka.
“Kolamba” (Anglicised as “Colombo”) is a Sinhalese word meaning port, ferry, harbor, or haven.

Colombo’s cosmopolitan side supports ever-more stylish eateries, galleries, and shops. Surprises abound — with a little exploration, you’ll find great local food, characterful shops, and tiny, convivial cafes. Meanwhile, a building boom like no other is transforming the city’s skyline.

Old Parliament Building Colombo

This is the building that houses the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka. The Neo-Baroque style building was built during the British colonial era to house the Legislative Council of Ceylon, and was an idea of Sir Henry McCallum. This was subsequently included in a proposal made by a committee to construct the new building for the Secretariat, Council Chamber and Government offices on reclaimed land at the northern end of Galle Face, which was approved by the Government in 1920. Austin Woodeson, chief architect of the Public Works Department of Ceylon, was tasked with the building’s design; his initial estimate of 400,000 rupees for the scheme was later revised by the Public Works Advisory Board to 450,000. The building was opened on 29 January 1930 by Governor Sir Herbert Stanley; a year later it was taken over by the State Council of Ceylon for its use, who were tenants of the building until 1947.

Independence Memorial Hall

Also known as Independence Commemoration Hall, is a national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese elected legislature on 4 February 1948. It also houses the Independence Memorial Museum. The monument was built at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, occurred at a special podium on 4 February 1948. Located at the head of the monument is the statue of the first prime minister of the country Rt. Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake, “The Father of the Nation.” Most of the annual National Independence Day celebrations have been held here.

Gangaramaya Temple

Gangaramaya is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Colombo. In the late 19th Century, the Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayake Thera was playing a key role in ensuring a Buddhist and cultural resurgence, at a time when Buddhism was on the decline following the influence of Christianity and western culture. After the Venerable Sri Sumangala, his chief pupil Devundera Sri Jinaratana Nayake Thera took on the administration of the temple. Thereafter the Gangaramaya became what it is today: much more than a temple in the conventional term, but a place of worship, a seat of learning, and a cultural centre.

Old Colombo Dutch Hospital

The Old Colombo Dutch Hospital (known as The Dutch Hospital) is considered to be the oldest building in the Colombo Fort area dating back to the Dutch colonial era in Sri Lanka. It is now a heritage building and a shopping and dining precinct. Built as a hospital by the Dutch, it has been used for several different purposes over the years. It is believed to have existed since 1681, as recorded by German Christopher Schweitzer. The Dutch established the Colombo hospital to look after the health of the officers and other staff serving under the Dutch East India Company. The hospital’s close proximity to the harbor allowed it to serve Dutch seafarers. The surgeon with the longest service at the Colombo hospital was Alleman. The most famous of all the surgeons who worked in the Colombo hospital was undoubtedly Paul Hermann, who served from 1672–79. Hermann has been described as the father of botany in Sri Lanka.

King Sri Wickrama Raja singhe’s Prison Room

The prison cell of the last King of Kandy, King Sri Wickrama Rajasingha, in Colombo Fort is a somewhat well-known monument. Although most individuals working in the Fort area do not notice it, it is a famous destination for tourists. It is situated within the premises of the Ceylinco House building down Janadipathi Mawatha (Queen’s Street) at the turn off to Bank of Ceylon Mawatha. This is really the prison cell of the last King or something else; as there appear currently two traditions to this story, a common tradition and an academic tradition.

The present monument is in the shape of a half capsule with the curved half facing north containing the chamber. The structure is roughly 12 feet in length, 11 feet in width, and about 8 feet in height. The entrance to the chamber is 3 feet wide facing north with two small vertical openings on either side with two iron bars; the width of the walls is approximately 2 feet. The outer surface is decorated with 6 simple pilasters. The structure contains a vaulted roof with the exterior decorated in scales with a circular ventilation duct figuring prominently on top.

Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters (660 ft) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kasyapa (477–495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure Sīhāgiri, the Lion Rock. The capital and the royal palace was abandoned after the king’s death.

En-route visit the Spice Garden. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, experience the Cultural Dance Show in the evening & City Tour in Kandy.

About Kandy

Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka located in the Central Province. It was the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. It is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Spices in Sri Lanka ( Ayurvedic Village)

The spice trade in Asia at the time was a kind of monopoly. The spice exchange was run by the Arabic and North African dealers who were prepared to pay a great sum of money for a pound of the fascinating thing. By the 1400s, the European sailors had realized that their ships could beat camels, so the European sailors started to sail towards Asia searching for new land and the valuable rare spices. Discovery of Vasco de Gama was a great stride in the expansion and spread of the Sri Lankan spice in the European market. Vasco de Gama’s success as a pilgrim prompted the Portuguese arrival in Sri Lanka in 1536. After some time, a settlement was reached by Portugal and Sri Lanka that incorporated a tribute of 110,000 pounds of cinnamon paid every year to Portugal by the Sinhalese Kings. Ever since, Sri Lankan spices, especially cinnamon, were widely available in the European spice market.

Templeof The Tooth Relic

Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple.

The Cultural Dance Show

The culture of Sri Lanka mixes modern elements with traditional aspects and is known for its regional diversity. There are three main styles of Sri Lankan classical dance: The Kandyan dances of the Hill Country, known as Uda Rata Natum; the low country dances of the southern plains, known as Pahatha Rata Natum; Sabaragamuwa dances, or Sabaragamuwa Natum. “Ves” dance, the most popular, originated from an ancient purification ritual, the Kohomba Yakuma or Kohomba Kankariya. The dance was propitiatory, never secular, and performed only by males. Dances in low country are highly ritualistic. This form of dance is performed to appease evil spirits which cause sickness and is thus called ‘Devil Dance’. Sabaragamu dances are usually performed in Ratnapura, relating to the worshipping of God Saman, much revered by local people. There are 32 main dances in Sabaragamuwa Style.

Galle Fort

The Bay of Galle on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast features a fort first built in 1588 by the Portuguese and extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onward. This fort has a rich history and today hosts a multiethnic, multi-religious population. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria IV, it uniquely showcases the blend of European architecture with South Asian traditions from the 16th to 19th centuries. Both the Sri Lankan government and Dutch property owners aim to make Galle Fort one of the modern wonders of the world.

Mask Museum

Ambalangoda is famous for crafting traditional wooden masks and puppets from light Kaduru wood (Nux vomica), which is smoke-dried for a week. These vibrant, hand-carved, and painted masks are used in three main dance rituals:

  • Kolam — humorous, mocking stories about colonial-era life

  • Sanni — devil masks for exorcism ceremonies to heal illnesses believed caused by demons

  • Raksha — masks used in festivals and processions

Local puppet shows featuring dramas, comedies, and folk tales were also popular entertainment, influenced by South Indian, Asian, and European traditions. The iconic Naga Raksha (Cobra demon) mask is especially striking with bulging eyes, a wide mouth with fanged teeth, and cobra hoods.

With traditional exorcism (thovil), mask dancing (kolam), and puppetry (rookada) declining, interest in mask carving has decreased. However, the local mask museum preserves this heritage by displaying reproductions and carving techniques to visitors.

Turtle Hatchery

The Sea Turtle Hatchery is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the survival of sea turtles for future generations. Located in southern Sri Lanka, these hatcheries protect sea turtles, which face extinction due to harmful human activities. Staff patrol the beaches throughout the night to safeguard mother turtles as they come ashore to lay eggs, protecting both the turtles during nesting and ensuring their safe return to the ocean afterward.

Madu River

The Madu Ganga is a minor river in Sri Lanka’s Galle District, starting near Uragasmanhandiya and expanding into Madu Ganga Lake at Balapitiya. It flows about 4.4 km before reaching the Indian Ocean. The river is historically significant as the site of the first Buddhist upasampada (higher ordination ceremony) in 1803, held on boats anchored on the water. The Kothduwa Temple, a Buddhist temple, sits on an isolated island in the lake.

Together with the nearby Randombe Lake, connected by narrow channels, Madu Ganga forms a rich coastal wetland ecosystem with many mangrove islets. This ecosystem supports about 303 plant species from 95 families and 248 vertebrate animal species. Locals on the islets also produce peeled cinnamon and cinnamon oil, blending cultural heritage with natural richness.

Cinnamon Island in Madu River

Experience an unforgettable journey to a Cinnamon production island on the Madu Ganga River in Southern Sri Lanka. Cinnamon, both a valuable spice and traditional medicine, is exported worldwide from Sri Lanka. During your boat trip through the scenic Madu Ganga wetlands, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the cinnamon production area. Here, you can observe the fascinating processes involved in creating various cinnamon-based products, offering a unique insight into this important local craft.
